Learning & Teaching

At Crofton Downs Primary School, we take an inquiry approach to learning and teaching.

We want our children to ask questions, solve problems, interpret, analyse and justify their conclusions, ensuring that they are fully involved in their own learning.

The New Zealand Curriculum has eight learning areas: English (literacy), Mathematics and Statistics (numeracy), the Arts, Health and Physical Education, Learning Languages, Science, Social Sciences and Technology.

Wherever possible, we integrate children’s learning in all of these areas using inquiry into a new theme each term.

Alongside this, we place a strong emphasis on our excellent literacy and numeracy programmes.

Unusually for a New Zealand primary school, our children are also introduced to the learning of another language. All children take a weekly Japanese language lesson, taught by a Japanese teacher.
